"I went to three concerts last week, two by internationally famous musicians and the other by the Halifax Young Singers. I got the biggest buzz from the Young Singers performance"

About Us

The aims of the young singers are to encourage young people to enjoy singing and to develop their vocal skills. The choir gives young people a real feeling of what can be achieved through teamwork and being part of a successful group.

The choir was formed 18 years ago and singers have been on numerous tours throughout Europe, visiting Germany and France.

Young Singers is friendly, welcoming, encouraging and fun, but we work hard and this shows in our performances.

Why don't you come along and see what we do? We'd love to see you and new members are always welcome.

Who We Are

At present we have a loyal and enthusiastic membership of around 90 singers, who are either members of the Youth Choir or Chamber Choir depending on their age. The Youth Choir is normally for singers, both girls and boys, in years 5-8 at school. The members of the Chamber Choir are in years 9 and above and sing in four parts.

Wherever possible we bring all singers together to make a great sound - as we have proved in competitions and concerts!

Music Director: Lynn Hudson

Lynn Hudson is a graduate of Leeds University where she was awarded the Frank Toothill Memorial Prize for Music. She has worked extensively in music education, teaching in schools in Leeds and serving, for many years, as Chair of Examiners for Music at Advanced Level for a major examining board. For five years she was responsible for running the secondary music PGCE course at the University of Leeds. Lynn still teaches part-time at Rishworth School and is Music Director of CSI: Halifax, a choir formed by Calderdale Music Service to entice adults back into singing. She has been Music Director of HYS since 1995.

Lynn is married to Thom Meredith, who is Music Director of Colne Valley Male Voice Choir and is Principal of Kirklees Music School. Thom and Lynn have one son, Harry, who until 2010 when he begins his degree at The Royal Northern College of Music, sang in Halifax Young Singers and played percussion in Kirklees Youth Symphony Orchestra.

Lynn, in conjunction with Sue Rosborough and Thom Meredith, has formed Harrogate Festival Choral Course, which is running its third residential choral course in Harrogate in August 2010. This is a wonderful opportunity for singers of all ages. Young Singers, aged 16 and above in full-time education, receive a reduction on the course fee. Accompanist: Craig Cockerill

Craig was born and bred in Halifax. He studied music at Dartington College of Arts, Devon.

Craig trained as a teacher under Lynn Hudson's guidance at Leeds University and in his first year of teaching was appointed Head of Music at Allerton High School, Leeds. Craig joined the Halifax Young Singers team in 2002 and his elder son, Ben, sings in the Youth Choir.

We are delighted to welcome Andrew Griffiths to the HYS team for 2010-11. Andrew will be supporting the boys in both the Youth and Chamber Choirs. Andrew is originally from Huddersfield, and was for many years a member of the Halifax Young Singers tenor section. In 2006 he left to study music at The University of Manchester where he continued singing as a member of the university chorus. After graduating in 2009, he stayed on in Manchester to study for a Masters in Musicology. Andrew has now returned to Huddersfield to begin a Secondary Music PGCE at The University of Huddersfield in September 2010. In addition to singing, Andrew is a tuba player, and frequently performs with local orchestras and bands.
